3 New System Center RTMs

April 21, 2010

As expected there have been announcements at this years MMS. The System Center team try and focus their release efforts around this event.

So we have

System Center Data Protection (DPM) 2010 – http://www.microsoft.com/systemcenter/en/us/data-protection-manager.aspx

and

System Center Essentials 2010 (SCE 2010) – http://www.microsoft.com/systemcenter/en/us/essentials.aspx

http://blogs.technet.com/systemcenteressentials/archive/2010/04/19/sc-essentials-2010-is-released-to-manufacturing.aspx

Info on both here – http://blogs.technet.com/systemcenter/archive/2010/04/19/the-right-tools-for-the-job-sce-2010-dpm-2010.aspx

The biggie that ties them all together and was expected last year.

System Center Service Manager 2010 – http://www.microsoft.com/systemcenter/en/us/service-manager.aspx

http://blogs.technet.com/stefan_stranger/archive/2010/04/21/download-microsoft-system-center-service-manager-2010-eval.aspx

http://wmug.co.uk/blogs/aquilaweb/archive/2010/04/21/service-manager-2010-rtm-eval.aspx

And some additional tools and visualisation for OpsMgr.

Following last Friday’s Office 2010 RTM. This release consists of two downloads:

1. Visio 2010 Add-in and Operations Manager 2007 R2

2. SharePoint 2010 Visio Services Data Provider

What’s new:

In addition to all the great functionality we added in the original Visio 2007 add-in, this adds,

•The Visio 2010 Add-in fully integrates the Visio 2007 add-in functionality into the Visio 2010 ribbon for a seamless user experience.
•The SharePoint 2010 Visio Services Data Provider leverages the power of Visio Services to provide the ability display Visio diagrams as live dashboards in SharePoint pulling health state directly from Operations Manager.

http://blogs.technet.com/momteam/archive/2010/04/20/visio-and-sharepoint-2010-extensions-for-operations-manager-have-shipped.aspx

This lot will take some digesting.

SCE 2010 Release Candidate

January 23, 2010

A few days ago the System Center Essential teams announced that SCR 2010 RC was available at a whopping 5 GB download. Thank goodness for broadband. For details see

http://blogs.technet.com/systemcenteressentials/archive/2010/01/20/essentials-2010-release-candidate-now-available.aspx

And they have then posted about how to use SCE 2010 to deploy Office 2010 beta.

MMS Keynote – Brad Anderson

April 29, 2009

Brad Anderson did this morning’s keynote. This was more focused than yesterdays but was still quite low energy with not much excitement or feedback from the audience. Most of his talk was futures and about focusing on the client and end up with a demo of the next version of Config Manager showing that an application can be set to follow a user on a number of devices and use different ways of presenting that app depending on the device. If the PC is the users primary device then it installs, if it is not a primary device then a Remote App session shortcut is presented and on some devices they will just get a message saying that the subscribed app is not available on this device.

Service Manager was demoed and that is building up for a release next year.

My old colleague, Jeff Wettlauffer, demonstrated the new OS upgrade method of SCCM installing Windows 7 RC on XP but keeping all the data on the PC without having to copy the data up to a server and back down. Also showed the app compatibility toolkit and then getting that old app to run on Med-V which is basically a copy of Virtual PC with XP but seamless so that the user only sees the app.

The most interesting demo was the new System Center Online tool which builds on WSUS and is like a web based version of WSUS, ForeFront and Config Manager in the cloud that you can log onto and then start managing your desktops with this tool. No servers to buy and no software to buy, install configure and look after. I can see this being very popular in small organisations if they get the pricing right.

Key dates for next major versions

For 2011

  • System Center Operations Manager
  • System Center Configuration Manager
  • System Center Virtual Machine Manager
  • System Center Service Manager

For 2010

  • System Center Service Manager
  • System Center Data Protection Manager
  • System Center Online Desktop Manager
  • System Center Essentials

See slide http://www.scom2k7.com/system-center-roadmap/

No mention of System Center Capacity Manager!

New Community MPs

August 7, 2008

This a growing area with some really good ones as well. I have tried to keep track of MPs not in the main Microsoft catalogue on this page. It needs some work to bring it up to date and make it look better. Pete Zerger also has a page at http://www.systemcenterforum.org/mps/.

The System Center Virtual User Group competition produced some great entries and these can be downloaded from http://www.systemcenterusergroup.com/files/ or check the blog.

I like the look of some of these MPs – especially Jaime Correia’s File System Management Pack which was overall winner. I haven’t had a chance to test these MPs yet but just looking through what they do and the docs shows great promise.

Here is the list of winners

File System Management Pack – Jaime Correia

This management pack provides several script-based monitors for shares, files and folders, offering something for most any scenario. The MP also includes custom object classes for discovered objects, and an impressive diagram view. The accompanying MP Guide is also quite detailed.

Remote Maintenance Mode Scheduler  – Timothy McFadden

With the Remote Maintenance Mode Scheduler you can schedule PowerShell maintenance mode scripts for computers or groups of computers in OpsMgr 2007 (System Center Operations Manager 2007) through a simple graphical user interface, rather than using the task scheduler directly. The tool also supports scheduling of scripts on any remote computer with the OpsMgr UI components installed.

With the SDK Connector Tool you can manage the Product Connectors in OpsMgr 2007 through a simple graphical user interface.

The reason I created this was that even though the functionality offered in the SDK Connector Tool is available trough Power Shell, I prefer the ease of clicking in a user interface over scripting.

Well said Vicent!

Plus there was Jason Scheffelmaer, who submitted an SCCM Roles Wizard.

And other entries are being released like

Alert Forward Management Pack 3.0 – Ron Williams

This management pack creates a console task that will allow you to forward the selected alert to an email recipient.  To forward an alert, select the alert , and then click on “Forward Alert via Email” in the Actions pane of the Operations Manager console. If you are running the task from a console installed on a PC that also has Microsoft Office Outlook, then the task will open an email pre-populated with the information contained in the alert.  If you do not have Outlook installed, then the email will be sent by SMTP.

Operations Manager 2007 Free Disk Space Monitor MP – Scott Moss

Operations Manager 2007 free disk space script monitor had the same problem the original mom 2005 script had. It required a disk to cross both a percent free and free megabytes thresholds before an alert would be fired off. This script only works on logical disks, not mount points. Monitoring of mount points is done by another script/monitor.

This management pack contains one Monitor named Logical Disk Free Space – Customized that runs the modified Operations Manager 2007 free disk space script. The monitor is setup to run every 15 minutes on the hour. The monitor is disabled by default. There are four rules to catch possible errors that are written to the agents Operations Manager event log.

Or you can do what Anders suggests and change one of the parameters to a very high level like 100% or free MB to 9999999 which means that one of the parameters is always met and only the other parameter will get used.  http://contoso.se/blog/?p=18. Sometimes it is the simplest things that are quite clever.

MSMQ Monitoring Script – Idan Leder

This script can be used in a Timed Script Rule in Operations Manager and Essentials to monitor the number of messages queued against a user defined threshold.

MSMQ MP was released in June and monitors queues but uses a lot a baseline monitors so it is quite noisy.

Management Pack Export Utility – Neale Brown

This recently updated utility provides several command line options for exporting sealed and unsealed MPs from both Operations Manager 2007 and System Center Essentials 2007. This is especially handy for Essentials administrators, as they previously have had no way to export MPs to an unsealed format.

Group-to-Class Sample MP for Operations Manager 2007 – Anders Bengtsson

This management pack allows security groups in Active Directory to be used to discover classes in Operations Manager 2007. For example if you already have your servers divvied into security groups in Active Directory you can use populate classes from those groups and use the same in Operations Manager 2007 for targeting. This management pack needs to be adapt to your environment before you can use it. Anders recommends you to do that in the Authoring Console.

There may be more to come. Check the SCVUG blog and the downloads page. Links at the top of the post.

The Blog List

June 5, 2008

A while back I started a page at the side of my blog with a list of all the MOM and SCOM bloggers.

http://ianblythmanagement.wordpress.com/mom-blog-links/

The feeling was if you came across my blog by accident but wanted more on Operations Manager you could look at the list and add which ones you fancied.

As time has gone on it became unwieldy as more people started to blog, some have left and blog names have changed. I used to list them with names I would remember but it started to become difficult to compare my feeds with that list.

I have spent some time and revamped the lists so that the names are the same as the blog name. This makes it easier for me to check that the list is up to date with my RSS reader. I have also demoted blogs that have not been updated in a while to the bottom category – old blogs. But there are still some great posts in these. Perhaps someone should pull together all the good posts into a mega document so that they do not get lost.

The list is split into Microsoft and community bloggers plus I have a list for SCE and another for community bloggers who do good posts about SCOM but are not exclusive. This allows me to include Techlog amongst others now.

I named mine starting with my name first. In retrospect that was a good idea and wish that others did the same. Having a list in my reader that all start with System Center then gets cut off does not help! Be proud of your blog and put your name at the front so it is easy to find in a list.

I have also starred feeds that I personally think are useful to add. Sorry to anyone who is not on the list but it helps narrow it down for newcomers. I personally read every blog on that list and if you are keen on SCOM then you should too.

MMS Partner Announcements

May 1, 2008

The big news is usually for the Microsoft announcements which although they are interesting are mainly about betas and roadmaps this year.

Partners also use the MMS to announce their news and while Silect have had a few blog posts about their release of a free version of MP Studio Lite there are 29 press announcements from partners at http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/events/mgmtsummit/partners.mspx.

Some highlights that I have picked out:

Quest Management Pack for Oracle – Operations Manager 2007 Edition. Supports management of Oracle database instances deployed on Windows, Unix and Linux hosts through the native Operations Manager agent.

Quest is also announcing dedicated initiatives supporting Microsoft’s System Center Operations Manager 2007 Cross-Platform Management Extensions (interesting as they had bought Vintela and eXc Software that already provide heterogeneous add-ons for SCOM). The launch of www.management-extensions.org provides a user-friendly forum specifically dedicated to addressing the needs of IT professionals regarding their specific management requirements.

Secure Vantage Technologies Audit Collection Admin adds a graphical user interface to ACS, eliminating the need to administer ACS through command prompts and manual registry edits.

Secure Vantage Technologies Audit Collection Syslog Gateway to forward syslog events into ACS for centralized alerting, archiving and reporting.

Xandros BridgeWays Management Packs betas which utilize the Operations Manager 2007 Cross Platform Extensions for the management of Apache and MySQL on Windows, Linux and Solaris.

AVIcode SQL Reporting Services Management Pack which monitors, detects and diagnoses problems affecting custom reports rendered by Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services and provides data on custom report usage including trend analysis and correlation of usage with resource utilization, all within Microsoft System Center Operations Manager 2007.

HERMES SoftLab announces Management Pack for Oracle’s Siebel. (This has been requested by a number of organisations that I have seen so could be popular).

iWave Software introduces its next generation of integration connectors for Microsoft System Center Operations Manager. The first connector in the new product line is the iWave System Center Operations Manager 2007 to CA’s Unicenter Service Desk r11 Connector.

The NetQoS Management Pack for Operations Manager 2007 combines application response time, link traffic analysis, and device performance metrics from the NetQoS Performance Center into the Microsoft System Center Operations Manager console.

The Secure Vantage Compliance Security Suite allows Windows-based enterprises to manage and audit their data centers more securely while enforcing controls. With comprehensive auditing of Group Policy configurations and changes, coupled with advanced analytics for security events, the suite enables data center customers to quickly assess configuration risks and alert on security violations and incidents. The suite also includes Secure Vantage’s new Security Dashboards for System Center and Forefront Security, providing a centralized security and compliance console for IT professionals, auditors and management.

SolarWinds announced the Orion Management Pack for System Center Operations Manager 2007 and System Center Essentials 2007. The Orion Management Pack will be available at no charge and will connect SolarWinds’ Orion network management platform to Microsoft System Center products. Scheduled for release in June.

And an MMS is not an MMS without 1E. It is nice to see that NightWatchman which has been around for a while which cuts costs by safely shutting down PCs left on overnight is enjoying a new life with all the concerns about green issues.

There are more announcements. So have a look to see if there are announcements that I have not mentioned (I have not covered the SCCM and SCVMM ones) that might interest you.

Windows 2008 Support Plans

January 10, 2008

On the 7th I posted that I would like to see what is going to be supported for MOM 2005 and SCOM 2007 with Windows 2008 and SQL 2008. Well Satya (aka Deployment Man from the MOM Product Team) has done a post about Windows 2008.

http://blogs.technet.com/momteam/archive/2008/01/09/support-plans-for-opsmgr-2007-sce-and-mom-2005-running-on-windows-server-2008.aspx

Basically don’t bother with MOM 2005 on 2008 except for agents but all roles on 2007 will be supported 90 days after RTM. And SCE will also be done but not for Core except for agents again.

Thanks for posting Satya. I wish all my requests were answered so quickly!

Now who is looking at support for SQL 2008 for these products?

Not Everyone likes SCE

June 8, 2007

I posted a while back that I liked System Center Essentials (SCE) and Pete and Bjorn have also been complimentary about it. There is a good article on SystemCenterForum.org on when you should use SCE and when you should consider SCOM, WSUS and SMS. However we do tend to blog about MOM and SCOM mainly. So it was interesting to read a perspective from an SMS expert.  Garth is less complimentary about SCE.

http://smsug.ca/blogs/garth_jones/archive/2007/06/05/429.aspx

I think he has missed it a bit - it is not MOM Lite nor AD application deployment but as an SMS expert he is used to the total control that a product like SMS can give him. It is for companies with less than 30 servers and 500 PCs. I could not imagine a small organization trying to run SMS for about 50 PCs but I could imagine them using SCE.

More mini videos

March 2, 2007

In January I posted about 3 mini SCOM 2007 webcasts. Well Justin Incarnato, Microsoft, has left a comment that there is more on the web with SCE also getting some.

”we have quite a few more for OM 2007 and 8 or so for SCE. Check back at the site today, as we have added a couple. We have some more coming by Monday that cover Diagnostics and Recoveries, Monitors, Rules, and Views.”

As well as “Using the Operations Console”, “About Monitors” and “Distributed Applications” at http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/mom/opsmgr/webcasts.mspx there is now

The Monitoring Space
Presenters: Tom Keane, Microsoft
This video provides an overview of using the Active Alerts view, the Look for filter, Performance views, and the Computers view.

Use the My Workspace Space
Presenters: Tom Keane, Microsoft
This video provides an overview of using the Favorites Views and Saved Searches.

Computer and Device Discovery
Presenters:Justin Incarnato, Microsoft
This video demonstrates installing agents on discovered Windows Servers and Proxy Agents SNMP devices.

And at http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sce/evaluate/webcasts.mspx there is 4 webcasts for SCE 2007.

Getting Started with System Center Essentials 2007
Presenter: Scott Bleasdell, Microsoft
This video provides a high-level overview of all of the major features of System Center Essentials 2007.

Deploying Office 2007 with System Center Essentials 2007
Presenter: Scott Bleasdell, Microsoft
This video shows how to quickly create a software deployment package for Office 2007 and approve the package for deployment to Windows client computers using System Center Essentials 2007.

Using the Updates Space
Presenter: Casey McKinnon, Microsoft
This video provides an overview on configuring update management settings, viewing synchronization status, deploying updates, and viewing deployment status reports.

Importing Third-party Updates
Presenter: Casey McKinnon, Microsoft
This video provides an overview on how to import third-party updates using System Center Essentials 2007.

I like these short mini webcasts. They are about 3 to 5 mins on one topic and gives an insight into that area without having to spend a whole hour on a webcast where you already know about 60% of the content. I am glad that they are doing more. They must be ramping up for SCOM RTM which is due in a few weeks to coincide with the Management Summit at San Diego.
